Google AI Overviews now appear on 48% of tracked queries as of February 2026, up from about 31% a year earlier. When an AI Overview is present, organic click-through rate falls roughly 61% on non-branded queries (Seer Interactive). Brands cited inside the overview earn 35% more organic clicks than uncited competitors. Branded queries are the only category where AI Overviews increase CTR, by 18.68% (Semrush). The strategy implication: stop treating AI Overviews as an SEO problem and start treating them as a citation contest.
What the prevalence data actually shows
By February 2026, AI Overviews triggered on roughly 48% of all tracked Google queries, up from about 31% one year earlier, a 58% year-over-year increase (ALM Corp analysis of industry data). Growth was not linear. AI Overviews crossed the 40% threshold in June 2025, then accelerated through Google's Gemini 3 default rollout for AI Overviews on January 27, 2026.
Prevalence varies sharply by industry. Healthcare queries trigger AI Overviews 88% of the time; Education 83%; B2B Technology 82%; Restaurants 78%; Insurance ~63%. If you sell into those categories, the AI Overview is the search result for most of your terms, the ten blue links sit below the fold or are skipped entirely.

How AI Overviews crushed organic CTR, and where they didn't
Seer Interactive analyzed 3,119 informational queries across 42 organizations between June 2024 and September 2025, 25.1 million organic impressions and 1.1 million paid impressions. The result: organic CTR on queries with an AI Overview fell from 1.76% to 0.61%, a 61% drop. Paid CTR fell 68%, from 19.7% to 6.34% (Seer Interactive).
Pew Research Center, working from a panel of 900 U.S. adults' real browsing data across 68,879 unique searches, found a similar pattern: users clicked a traditional result on just 8% of searches that produced an AI summary, compared to 15% on searches without one (Pew Research). Only 1% of those searches resulted in a click into a citation inside the AI summary itself.
Two things shifted the conversation in early 2026. First, Seer's update found CTR on AIO queries climbed from a floor of 1.3% in December 2025 to 2.4% in February 2026, Seer calls this a leveling off, not a recovery. Second, Semrush's analysis of more than 10 million keywords surfaced the asymmetry that matters most for brand teams: branded queries with AI Overviews see CTR rise 18.68%, while non-branded queries with AI Overviews see CTR fall 19.98%.
Branded queries are the exception
The branded-query CTR lift is the most strategically important number in the AI Overviews dataset. When someone searches your brand name and an AI Overview appears, the overview almost always includes your own content as a citation, and your CTR goes up, not down.
This is why brand-building activities now feed directly into AI search performance. Ahrefs' correlation study across 75,000 brands found that branded web mentions correlate 0.664 with AI Overview visibility, outperforming traditional backlink metrics. Earned media, digital PR, podcast appearances, partner co-marketing, is now an AI visibility input in a way it was never an SEO input.
The implication for your reporting: stop measuring AI Overview impact only on your unbranded keyword set. The branded query layer is where AI Overviews are a tailwind, and it is also where they show executives what is at stake when a competitor displaces you in answer text.
What citation actually buys you
The single largest behavioral split inside AI Overview queries is whether a brand is cited or not. Brands cited inside an AI Overview earn 35% more organic clicks and 91% more paid clicks than brands left out, even when both are competing for the same query. A practitioner-side breakdown of CTR across the three states, cited, uncited, no AIO present, looks like this:
| Query state | Average organic CTR |
|---|---|
| AIO present, brand cited | 0.70% |
| AIO present, brand not cited | 0.52% |
| No AIO present | 1.45% |
Two takeaways. First, citation is not a substitute for ranking on a non-AIO query, the absolute click volume is still highest when no AI Overview triggers. Second, on the queries that do trigger an AI Overview, citation is the difference between getting most of the (already smaller) click pool and watching it go to whichever competitor the model picked.
Position inside the overview matters too. Authoritas's 2026 analysis found citations placed in the first sentence of an AI Overview earn 3.1× more clicks than citations buried in the final paragraph. The implication: being cited at all is necessary but not sufficient, being cited first carries most of the residual click value.

Top-10 ranking is no longer a citation guarantee
For most of 2025, the dominant assumption was that ranking in the top 10 organic results was the path into AI Overviews. That assumption is now broken.
Ahrefs analyzed 863,000 keywords and 4 million AI Overview URLs and found that only 38% of pages cited in AI Overviews also rank in the top 10 for the same query, down from 76% just seven months earlier (Ahrefs). The remaining citations split almost evenly between pages ranking 11–100 (31.2%) and pages that don't rank in the top 100 at all (31%). BrightEdge's separate analysis puts the top-10 overlap as low as 17%.
76% of AI Overview citations came from pages already ranking in the organic top 10 for the same query. Strategy: keep doing classical SEO, AI Overviews follow the rankings. 38% top-10 overlap. Citations now pull from a wider pool, review aggregators, PR pages, Reddit threads, Wikipedia. Strategy: track citation share separately from ranking share.
The shift coincided with the Gemini 3 default rollout in January 2026. The practical implication: the page that wins the citation is increasingly the one that best answers the specific sub-query the model decomposed from the user's intent, not the one that won the keyword in classical SEO terms. Parse measured a parallel disruption on ChatGPT, where a flagship model upgrade cut the sources cited per answer roughly in half.
Where AI Overviews actually pull their citations from
Semrush analyzed more than 230,000 prompts and 100 million citations across ChatGPT, Google AI Mode, and Perplexity. The same domain pattern dominates AI Overview citation behavior: Reddit, LinkedIn, Wikipedia, Inc., Medium, and YouTube account for an outsized share of all AI citations. Google AI Mode in particular leans heavily on properties Google owns or partners with, LinkedIn, YouTube, Reddit, Google Blog (Semrush study).
5W's AI Platform Citation Source Index 2026, which synthesized 680 million citations across ChatGPT, AI Overviews, Perplexity, Gemini, and Claude, found Reddit alone captures roughly 40% of citations and the top 15 domains absorb 68% of the entire AI answer pipeline. Parse's own ranking of the source domains AI cites most, and its finding on how YouTube stacks up against Reddit as a cited source, match that concentration. For most categories, this means the question is not "can my page win the citation" but "am I in the third-party content that AI Overviews already trust." That is a different brief, closer to digital PR, review-platform optimization, and community presence than to classical content-and-links SEO.
Zero-click is the structural change underneath everything
The CTR drop is the symptom. The structural change is zero-click behavior. On Google searches that trigger an AI Overview, the average zero-click rate is 83%. On searches with no AI Overview, zero-click averages around 60%. In Google's standalone AI Mode experience, zero-click reaches roughly 93%, the answer is delivered, the user does not click anything, the session ends.
A senior marketer briefing the CMO has to be honest about what this means: when AI Overviews appear, the modal outcome of a Google search is a finished session with no website visit. Traffic from that query layer will not return to 2023 levels. The right response is not to fight zero-click but to be the brand the model names inside the answer, because for the 17% who do click, citation buys you a 35% organic-click lift, and for the 83% who don't, the brand mention itself is now your impression.
What this means for ecommerce and B2B specifically
Adobe's analysis of more than one trillion visits to U.S. retail sites found AI-driven traffic up 393% year-over-year in Q1 2026. The conversion behavior reversed: in March 2025, AI traffic converted 38% worse than standard sources; by March 2026, it was converting 42% better. Revenue per visit from AI referrals is 37% higher than from non-AI traffic (Adobe).
The volume is small relative to total search, but the unit economics are inverted. AI-referred visitors arrive higher-intent, the model has already pre-qualified the consideration set, so the fraction who reach your site are the ones who already accepted the recommendation. For B2B, a similar pattern shows up in our Parse data: AI Overview citation share leads brand searches by roughly two to four weeks. When a brand starts winning AI Overview citations on category queries, branded search volume tends to follow.
How to actually measure your AI Overview footprint
Most analytics stacks under-count AI Overview impact in two ways. First, AI Overview impressions show up in Google Search Console as zero-click impressions, visible if you bucket by query, invisible if you bucket only by clicks. Second, traffic from AI Overview citations arrives with no special referrer in many cases, so it lands in "direct" or "organic" buckets in GA4.
Three measurements your team should run monthly:
- AI Overview presence rate by query class. Pull your tracked keyword set, segment into branded, category, and product queries, and measure what percentage of each segment now triggers an AI Overview. This tells you how much of your search universe is already mediated by AI.
- Citation share inside AI Overviews. For the queries that do trigger AI Overviews, measure how often your brand is cited versus how often each direct competitor is cited. This is the ranking-equivalent metric for the AI Overview era. Parse calls this the citation share dimension of Parse Score and tracks it across ChatGPT, AI Overviews, and Perplexity.
- Branded query CTR with and without AIO. This is the only segment where AI Overviews are a tailwind. If your branded CTR is not rising on AIO-triggered branded queries, your brand is being summarized in a way that does not credit you, that is a content and entity-data problem, not a ranking problem.
For the diagnostic that takes this from monitoring to action, see our AI visibility audit checklist. For the structural fixes that increase citation share, content structure, schema, and entity consistency, start with how to structure content so AI models cite it.
What to do with this in your next leadership review
The data above is enough to reframe the AI Overviews conversation in your next executive review. Three points worth landing.
First, AI Overviews are not coming, they are here, on roughly half of all queries and the overwhelming majority of healthcare, education, and B2B tech queries. The strategic question is not whether to act but whether your team has separate measurement for AI Overview citation share, distinct from your existing rank-tracking dashboard.
Second, the rank-to-citation overlap has collapsed from 76% to 38% in seven months. A team that judges itself by ranking will look healthy on a dashboard while losing AI Overview citations to Reddit threads, Wikipedia entries, and review aggregators. Build the citation-share metric and report it alongside rankings.
Third, branded queries are the leading indicator. Brand-building activity, earned media, digital PR, partner co-marketing, founder visibility, feeds the entity graph the AI Overview pulls from. Budget that has historically been classified as "PR" or "brand" should now have an AI visibility line item attached, and the success metric is citation share inside the overview, not coverage volume.
No, but they meaningfully redistribute it. Seer Interactive's 2025 study showed organic CTR fell 61% on queries with AI Overviews, and Pew Research's 2025 panel data showed the click rate halving when an AI summary appears. Branded queries are the exception, Semrush's 10M-keyword analysis found branded CTR rises 18.68% with an AIO present. The traffic that survives is higher-intent. It helps but no longer guarantees citation. Ahrefs found only 38% of AI Overview citations come from pages that also rank in the top 10 for the same query, down from 76% seven months earlier. Roughly a third of AI Overview citations come from pages ranking 11–100, and another third from pages that do not rank in the top 100 at all. Track AI Overview citation share separately from ranking share. Brands that are already entity-strong: well-represented in Wikipedia, Wikidata, and high-citation third-party domains like Reddit, LinkedIn, and category review sites. Adobe's data shows AI-referred ecommerce traffic now converts 42% better than standard sources and generates 37% more revenue per visit. The brands gaining are the ones that fed the AI's entity model with consistent third-party signals before the AI started writing answers. Three steps. First, pull your tracked keyword set and segment by query class (branded, category, product). Second, for each query, record whether an AI Overview triggers and whether your brand is cited inside it. Third, compare your citation share to direct competitors over time. Parse automates this across ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, and Perplexity at the prompt level rather than the keyword level. On Google searches that trigger an AI Overview, the average zero-click rate is roughly 83%, compared to about 60% on standard SERPs without an AI Overview. In Google's standalone AI Mode experience, zero-click reaches around 93%. The structural shift is permanent, the practical response is to be cited inside the overview rather than competing only for the residual clicks.
