Interestingly, Grammarly's newer Authorship product takes a different approach: instead of merely saying "this looks like AI," it attempts to provide visibility into the writing process—what was typed, copied, or generated.
That direction is potentially more interesting pedagogically than simply trying to build an ever-more-powerful AI detector.
I'd separate these into three different questions:
A. Text similarity:
"Does this student's work substantially overlap with existing material?"
Turnitin/Copyleaks/iThenticate are useful here.
B. AI-generation indicators:
"Does this writing exhibit characteristics associated with generative AI?"
Turnitin/Copyleaks/Grammarly can provide indicators, but don't regard them as conclusive evidence.
C. Authorship/process:
"Can I establish how this student actually produced the assignment?"
This is where I think higher education is heading.
For example, looking at:
can be considerably more informative than a single AI percentage.
If I were advising a university today, I'd structure it this way:
Turnitin → primary system
Copyleaks → pilot it alongside Turnitin and compare results on your own student corpus
iThenticate → primary similarity-checking tool
Grammarly → complementary tool, not your primary misconduct-detection system
Don't rely on an AI detector alone. Develop a process-based academic-integrity policy and use detection reports as one piece of evidence.
If you gave me one purchasing decision:
Student assignments → Turnitin.
Turnitin alternative → Copyleaks.
Research manuscripts → iThenticate.
Writing/AI assistance → Grammarly.
And if you're choosing at the department/university level, I would actually recommend doing a controlled comparison of Turnitin vs. Copyleaks using 50–100 real, anonymized papers from your courses. Compare false positives, missed matches, AI flags, multilingual cases, reporting, LMS integration, cost, and how much faculty time each system saves. That will tell you much more than vendor claims about "accuracy."
