But I wouldn't stop there if your goal is specifically software engineer. Use it as the first step, then move into deeper programming, data structures, software design and application development.
Rather than thinking:
"Which coding bootcamp should I attend?"
I'd think:
"What's the shortest path that converts my existing IT experience into credible software-engineering experience?"
A particularly strong route would be:
Phase 1 — 2–3 months
Python + Git + programming fundamentals
→ Google IT Automation or Codecademy
Phase 2 — 4–9 months
JavaScript/TypeScript + React + Node + SQL + APIs
→ Springboard, Fullstack, or equivalent structured curriculum
Phase 3 — alongside learning
Build software that solves actual IT problems:
Phase 4 — target adjacent roles first if necessary
You don't necessarily need to jump directly from IT Support to Software Engineer. Roles such as automation engineer, application support engineer, systems engineer, junior developer, QA automation engineer, DevOps engineer, or internal tools developer can be excellent stepping stones.
Your existing IT experience is an advantage here. A hiring manager may value an engineer who already understands production systems, users, troubleshooting, networking, authentication, deployments and enterprise environments.
If I were advising a mid-career IT support professional today:
No bachelor's degree: → WGU Software Engineering if you can make the long-term investment.
Already have a bachelor's degree and need to keep working: → Springboard or a similarly structured part-time program.
Can leave work temporarily and want speed: → Fullstack Academy.
Want to test the waters cheaply first: → Codecademy + projects.
Want the most natural first move from IT support: → Google IT Automation with Python, followed by deeper software-engineering training.
And I would put much more emphasis on the portfolio and actual coding ability than the name of the program. A mid-career IT professional with 5 years of experience plus three genuinely useful software projects can present a considerably stronger story than someone with a bootcamp certificate and a collection of tutorial projects.
