You absolutely do not need an all-Snap-on box. The National Aviation Academy makes essentially the same point: there's no single “best” brand, and different manufacturers excel at different tools.

For example, the GEARWRENCH 89-piece Aviation TEP set is currently around $886–$985 and is a very reasonable foundation if you don't want to spend several thousand dollars immediately.
At the other end, Sonic currently sells a 263-piece aviation A&P set and a 454-piece advanced set, with tool-control/serialization built in; they're much more expensive but make sense for a professional tool-control environment.
Don't buy a giant kit until you know your employer's tool list. Airline, MRO, corporate, helicopter, GA, and structures jobs can have dramatically different requirements. A structures mechanic, for example, will need substantially more riveting/sheet-metal equipment than a powerplant mechanic.
