The important caveat is that RPA shouldn't automatically be the integration strategy. If a legacy banking application exposes a stable API, database interface, message queue, or service layer, I'd generally prefer that over screen-scraping. RPA is most valuable where those interfaces don't exist, are too expensive to create, or can't safely be changed. Automation Anywhere itself describes this exact legacy-system problem: decades-old mission-critical applications may have no practical mechanism for exchanging data automatically.
I'd run a proof of concept against three genuinely ugly workflows, not a polished demo:
Then score each platform on reliability after UI changes, credential/security handling, audit trail, recovery from failures, concurrent bot capacity, mainframe integration, deployment/change management, and total cost of ownership.
That test will tell you much more than a vendor feature matrix. In banking, the question isn't whether a bot can complete the happy path—it's whether it can fail safely at 2 a.m. and leave an auditable trail when the core system behaves unexpectedly.
