Snort is an open-source intrusion prevention system (IPS) that performs real-time traffic analysis and packet logging. It uses a rule-based engine to detect malicious network activity, generate alerts, and can be deployed inline to block offending traffic. Rulesets are available as the Community Ruleset or the Snort Subscriber Ruleset (maintained by Cisco Talos), with subscription options for real-time updates.
