The Kona is still worth considering, particularly if you find a leftover 2025 at a steep discount. Hyundai says there was no 2026 Kona Electric model year because sufficient 2025 inventory remained; production resumes for 2027. The 2025 SE started at $32,975, with up to 261 miles of range on higher trims.
That makes a leftover Kona one of the cars I'd actively negotiate on rather than buying at MSRP.
If by "monthly payment" you mean lease payment, the ranking can change completely. Automakers can effectively subsidize a lease through the residual value and lease cash, producing a $250–$350 payment on a car that would be expensive to finance.
For a budget buyer, I'd use this rule:
Effective EV cost = monthly payment + electricity − gasoline cost avoided
And I'd compare total lease cost including drive-off money, not the advertised monthly payment. A "$249/month" lease with $4,000 due at signing is really about $360/month over 36 months before taxes/fees.
