The Hyundai Ioniq 5 is unusually compelling for a safety-conscious buyer because it combines a Top Safety Pick+ result with a relatively low price. IIHS gives the 2025 model Good ratings in its small-overlap, updated moderate-overlap and updated side crash tests, while standard equipment includes blind-spot detection, lane-departure warning/prevention and rear automatic braking.
The 2026 model also became substantially cheaper: the base SE RWD Standard Range starts around $36,600, while the SEL starts around $41,400.
For someone who wants lots of active safety without paying $50K–$60K, that's hard to beat.
The Chevrolet Equinox EV deserves a close look if you prefer an SUV. Chevrolet lists more than 20 standard safety/driver-assistance features and a starting price of $41,795 for the 2026 LT2.
The IIHS results are particularly encouraging: the 2026 Equinox gets Good ratings in the updated moderate-overlap and side tests, with standard blind-spot detection, lane-departure warning/prevention and rear automatic braking. Its pedestrian front-crash-prevention system is also rated Good.
One caveat: its small-overlap result is Acceptable rather than Good, which is why I'd put the Ioniq 5 ahead of it if crash-test performance is your absolute priority.
The Tesla Model Y earned IIHS Top Safety Pick+ for 2025. www.iihs.org Its driver-assistance technology is arguably the most sophisticated of these choices, particularly if you consider Tesla's optional Full Self-Driving system.
But I wouldn't equate more automation with greater safety. Driver assistance is still a supplement to an attentive driver, and I'd put more weight on independent crash testing and the effectiveness of standard collision-avoidance equipment than on the availability of a highly automated driving package.
The Ford Mustang Mach-E is another particularly strong safety pick: IIHS lists it as Top Safety Pick+ for 2025–26. The Toyota bZ4X is also Top Safety Pick+, while the Subaru Solterra earns the same designation.
If you're willing to spend more for a larger vehicle, the Kia EV9 is an exceptional safety-oriented family EV and is also IIHS Top Safety Pick+ for 2025–26. Larger vehicles generally provide greater occupant protection in crashes, although size and weight aren't substitutes for good crashworthiness.

One important distinction: NHTSA's 5-Star rating and IIHS Top Safety Pick+ aren't interchangeable. NHTSA is currently selecting the 2026 Ioniq 5, EV6, Model Y and other EVs for its 5-Star testing program, so some 2026 vehicles don't yet have a final NHTSA score.
