Does AI cite the same website more than once?
In nearly six in ten answers with at least two cited pages. AI cited two or more distinct pages from the same website in 251,446 of 423,921 such answers, or 59.31%.

We analyzed 4,357,458 cited-page links across 2,033,061 pages, 362,015 websites, and 439,213 answers to 17,370 organic prompts on ChatGPT Search and Google AI Mode from May 24 through July 23, 2026.
Nearly six in ten answers with at least two cited pages returned to one website
AI cited multiple distinct pages from the same registered website in 251,446 of 423,921 answers with at least two cited-page links, or 59.3144%. The other 172,475 answers cited each website once. A registered website groups hosts such as a main site and its subdomains.
Count both pages and websites when auditing sources. A page-level citation count alone can make an answer look more diverse than its website mix.
Takeaway
Google AI Mode repeated websites about twice as often as ChatGPT Search
Google AI Mode repeated a website in 180,935 of 235,736 answers with at least two cited pages, or 76.7532%.
ChatGPT Search did so in 70,511 of 188,185, or 37.4690%.
Google AI Mode's rate was 2.0484 times as high, a difference of 39.2842 percentage points.
Keep source-diversity audits separate by engine. The combined rate conceals a large engine difference, but this descriptive comparison does not identify its cause.
Takeaway
Longer citation lists made a repeated website much more likely
A website repeated in 10,361 of 70,002 answers with two or three page links, or 14.8010%. The rate rose to 36.0170% with four to six links, 64.6637% with seven to ten, and 87.6610% with eleven or more.
Compare source diversity within similar citation-list sizes. A longer list creates more opportunities for a website to contribute another page, so the aggregate rate is not a list-length-adjusted engine score.
Grouping citations by website removed about one in six page links
The 423,921 answers with at least two cited pages contained 4,342,166 cited-page links but 3,573,962 website appearances when each website counts once per answer. Collapsing each website to one appearance removed 768,204 extra page links, or 17.6917%.
Use page counts for content-level opportunity and website counts for source diversity. The two measures answer different questions.
Takeaway
A repeated website usually contributed two pages, not most of the list
Among 251,446 answers with a repeated website, the median count of pages from the most-used website was two. One website supplied a strict majority of all cited pages in 20,912 of 423,921 answers with at least two cited pages, or 4.9330%, and every page in 6,100 answers, or 1.4389%.
A repeated website is common without dominating the answer. Flag repeats for review, but reserve concentration warnings for answers where one website supplies most of the pages.
YouTube, Google, and Reddit led repeated-website answers
YouTube supplied multiple pages in 57,667 of the 99,609 answers that cited it, or 57.8934%.
Google did so in 38,844 of 48,959, or 79.3399%.
Reddit did so in 32,629 of 137,227, or 23.7774%.
Repeat counts and repeat rates describe different priorities. YouTube and
Reddit create broad review volume, while
Google's higher rate makes within-answer concentration a more frequent feature when it appears.

The repeated-website rate spanned 24.57 points across industries
Among industries with at least 1,000 answers that had at least two cited pages, Consumer Electronics reached 67.4023%, with 4,245 of 6,298 answers. Blockchain and Cryptocurrency reached 42.8302%, with 681 of 1,590. The difference was 24.5721 percentage points.
Benchmark an engine result against its category mix before treating it as unusually concentrated. The cut identifies where to investigate and does not show that industry caused the difference.

The headline survived stricter website and window definitions
Grouping by exact host instead of registered website returned 246,785 of 423,921, or 58.2149%. Starting on June 1 returned 240,053 of 408,908, or 58.7059%. The primary definition returned 59.3144%. The study excluded 15,292 one-link answers.
Subdomains and the opening partial week did not determine the result. The headline excludes one-link answers by design and describes repeated distinct pages, not repeated citation markers to the same page.
| Registered website | 59.3144% | 251,446 of 423,921 |
| One-link answers excluded | 15,292 | Cannot contain a repeated website |
| June 1 through July 23 | 58.7059% | 240,053 of 408,908 |
| Exact host | 58.2149% | 246,785 of 423,921 |
What marketers should do
Repeated websites appeared in 59.3144% of answers with at least two cited pages, the engine rates differed by 39.2842 points, and collapsing pages to websites removed 17.6917% of page links.
Store cited pages and registered websites as separate fields. Compare engines within similar citation-list sizes. Review high-volume repeated websites, then inspect whether their pages add independent evidence. Rerun the same fixed-window study next quarter before treating the rate as a durable engine characteristic.
