The MES should provide the operational "brain" while machine data flows upward in real time. The value comes from closing the loop: schedule → execute → measure → detect deviation → react → improve. Modern smart-manufacturing architectures increasingly emphasize real-time sensor/IoT data, analytics and event-driven feedback rather than MES functioning as a glorified electronic traveler.
Before choosing a vendor, I'd score the candidates against your actual factory, not generic MES functionality:
The last two are especially important: an MES that is theoretically more capable but takes three years and a huge systems-integration team can be worse operationally than a slightly less comprehensive system that you can deploy successfully.
